The Greater New Haven HIV Consumer Council

Mission:

The mission of the Greater New Haven HIV Consumer Council is to educate and increase understanding and awareness of who we are and to clarify HIV consumer issues. We are here to listen to the issues of persons infected and affected by HIV/AIDS and to be our own voice, to advocate for our own needs. We endeavor to identify gaps in HIV related services in the Greater New Haven area, and will help address these gaps either in legislative or local arenas. We seek to represent the diversity of those infected with HIV and are here to support each other. Although we have many faces, we have one voice."

Goals:

bulletCreate Educational programs to help plwhas live better quality and longer lives by utilizing both medical and alternative healing methods.
bulletCreate Educational materials to help people living with HIV/AIDS (plwhas) participate in their own positive health outcomes
bulletCreate Resource guides listing services and resources for all aspects of HIV care and prevention.
bulletCreate Awareness programs and self-empowerment programs to help people from becoming infected with HIV.
bulletCreate a web site for New Haven HIV Consumer Resources.
bulletCreate a network of legal resources and educational events.
bulletHelp Identify gaps in services
bulletCreate a Consumer Complaint grievance process and identify individuals and agencies to help resolve consumer issues.
bulletHelp consumers acquire faxes and/or computers to be involved in community groups and activism.
bulletEstablish or generate consumer reimbursement funds to compensate consumers for participation in activities of consumer leadership.

bulletHelp with our base of Operations
bulletTranslators for Spanish.
bulletComputer Desk, Locked file cabinet, office equipment 
bulletPart time administrative support for meetings, mailings, phone messages, event coordination and publicity.
bulletFunding for projects: Educational forums, Legislative training, (speakers, food, childcare, BI-lingual translations, plwha transportation), educational materials, resource guide, speakers.
bulletFunding for Conferences (i.e. train the trainers).
bulletConference room meeting space, with access to TV and video player for educational tapes.
bulletFunding for advertisements and public relations to increase awareness.
bulletFunding or donations of fax machines and/or computers for HIV activists involved in the council and community activities. (i.e. Ryan White, New Haven Collaborative, State wide meetings, action councils, advisory committees etc).
